by Bill Althaus, Grain Valley News Grain Valley second baseman Abe Scott is more than a super sophomore. She is a legend in the making. Scott has surpassed all the hype and build up this season, while proving she is one of the premier players in the state. "If she's not first-team all-state there is something wrong with the process," said Flip Courter, the coach of the 22-5 Eagles. "She is a legitimate 5-star player - she hits for average, hits for power, has a great glove, a strong arm and is one of the fastest players on the team. "She had a good freshman year last year, and this year, she's been incredible. "And she doesn't earn the respect because she is a sophomore, she earns it because she is truly one of the best players in the state." When you ask Scott about the pressure that comes with being a marquee player, she replies, "What pressure? I'm playing the game I love with a group of girls I love. We are more of a family than a team. "I know I'm having a successful season, but all I care about is winning and going to state. Those are my two goals." Scott was part of a magical inning where Morgan Hart hit a three-run homer, Sydnee Wager crushed a grand slam, Scott hit a two-run homer and Addie Wright added an inside-the-park home run in one inning in a 13-0 win over Fort Osage. The Eagles are believed to be the only team to ever accomplish this feat. Scott followed that up with her own cycle in a 15-5 win over Oklahoma's Class 6 defending state champion Owasso. "Nothing she does surprises me," Courter added. "A lot of people did a lot of research and we believe that no team has ever hit for a home-run cycle in one inning. Then, Abe hits for the cycle against the defending Class 6 Oklahoma state champion. "And the best thing about this season is that she's having fun. And all the girls on the team support her." One of those players is junior Madison Rust. "Abe is amazing, and she is having an unbelievable season," Rust said. "You just wait for something special to happen every time she goes up to bat. She was part of the home-run cycle then hits for the cycle on her own. She's a one-of-a-kind player and she's my teammate!" When asked her personal cycle, Scott blushes. "I needed a double to complete the cycle and I hit a ball really hard," Scott said. "It was the only time in my life I hoped that it would not go over the fence." It struck the outfield fence as she cruised into second base, completing the cycle. "That was pretty crazy, and a lot of fun. And it helped us win the game, which was the best part of the night." Grain Valley sophomore second baseman Abe Scott has enjoyed a power-charged season for the Eagles 22-5 softball team. She is believed to be the only high school player in the history of the game to be part of a one-inning, home-run cycle, and then hit the cycle individually later in the season. She is hitting .558 with eight home runs, 36 RBIs and 41 runs scored. Photo credit: Bill Althaus
