Jackson County to host informational meetings on property assessment process

     The Jackson County, Missouri Assessor’s Office will host four community meetings in coming weeks where property owners can learn more about the county’s property assessment process. A representative from the Assessor’s Office will be present at each meeting to share information and to answer questions about the following:

• Functions of the Assessment Department and new technology
• Information on the levy process and the role of the County Collector
• What the market is doing and where it is going this year
• Parcel by parcel review
• Assessment appeal process and reasons why a property owner may apply

The meeting schedule is listed below.

• 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday, March 22 at the Mid-Continent Public Library – Colbern Road located at 1000 NE Colbern Rd., in Lee’s Summit
• 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m., Monday, March 27 at the Morningstar youth & Family Life Center located at 2525 E 27th St., in Kansas City
• 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday, March 29 at the Fleming Meeting Hall located at 21906 SW Woods Chapel Rd., in Blue Springs
• 5:30 p.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday, April 5 at the Mid-Continent Public Library – North Independence located at 317 W 24 HWY in Independence

     In Missouri, assessments are completed every other year, on the odd-numbered years. Property owners in the state should receive their Market Value Notice around mid-April. Taxing authorities in the county, not the assessor, are responsible for setting and adjusting tax rates. Taxing authorities include school boards, fire districts, water districts, libraries, cities, counties, junior colleges, and various funds – including the mental health fund, disabled services fund, and blind pension. Jackson County receives approximately 7 cents of every of tax dollar, while the remaining 93 cents of every tax dollar go to the taxing authorities.
